Why hot wax is everywhere in gravel cycling

Last weekend we went to Unbound. Beautiful gravel roads, dusty bikes, strong riders, coffee stops… and one thing we couldn’t stop noticing: Almost everyone was riding a hot waxed chain. Honestly, a year ago that would’ve been very different. Back then, hot wax still felt pretty niche. Now it feels like it’s becoming the standard. And after riding events like Traka & Unbound, it’s easy to understand why.

Gravel and hot wax just make sense together

Gravel races are brutal on drivetrains. Dust, dry roads and long distances are basically the perfect recipe for turning an oil-lubed chain into a black grinding paste halfway through a ride.

That’s exactly why so many gravel riders are switching to hot wax.

Not because it’s trendy, but because it simply works better for the type of riding they do. Your drivetrain stays cleaner. The bike stays quieter. And you spend way less time degreasing your cassette after every ride.

Once riders experience that difference for themselves, they usually don’t go back.

The organised cyclist

What’s interesting is that gravel riders are probably the perfect audience for hot wax. Most gravel cyclists aren’t professional riders. But they do care deeply about their equipment. They have goals, love riding long distances and want their bike to feel perfect.

At Cyclowax, we call them “organised cyclists”.

The kind of rider who wakes up early for a ride, knows exactly what tyre pressure to run and secretly enjoys cleaning and preparing the bike almost as much as the ride itself.

Hot wax fits perfectly into that world. Less maintenance. Less mess. Better ride feel. More time actually riding your bike.

Why hot wax makes so much sense for gravel

The conversation around drivetrains has changed

At Unbound we honestly spent half the weekend zooming in on drivetrains. And compared to previous years, the difference was impossible not to notice.

More riders talking about hot wax.
More clean chains.
More curiosity around drivetrain performance.

It really feels like gravel cycling is moving in a different direction now when it comes to chain maintenance. And honestly, that’s pretty cool to see.

Because when Cyclowax started in 2020, melting wax for your bike chain still sounded a little weird to most people. At Marly Grav, Traka and Unbound this year, it felt completely normal and almost weird if you're still using oil-lube.

A clean chain just makes riding better

At the end of the day, the reason hot wax is growing so fast in gravel is actually very simple. People want to ride more and clean less. And they want their bike to feel good every single ride. That’s exactly what hot wax does.
