Why Ollie from GCN loves our Performance Wax Heater

GCN Tech, the biggest cycling YouTube channel in the world, published a video about hot waxing chains. And both of our heaters were featured. How cool is that? If you’re into cycling tech, drivetrain efficiency, or just love a clean chain, it’s a great watch. Ollie from GCN dives deep into why waxing chains works, how the process has evolved, and why purpose-built tools make it easier than ever.

FAQ

From kitchen hacks to purpose-built waxing systems

Chain waxing has come a long way. In the early days, riders melted wax in pans on their kitchen stove. Then came water baths, crockpots, and other DIY solutions. It worked, but it was messy, slow and far from ideal.

We came up with our Original Starter kit, so could use specific waxing pots that could heat our wax at the correct temperature, make it as simple and easy as possible to hot wax your chain.

Fastforward to today, where we now designed our Performance Wax heater. The first hot waxing device built from the ground up specifically for chain waxing, not repurposed from another industry.

The goal was simple: make hot waxing easier, cleaner, faster and overall better for cyclists.

Wax your chain in 10 minutes

One of the things Ollie highlights in the video is speed. With the new Cyclowax Performance Wax Heater, the entire process, melting the wax, cleaning the chain with the vibrating motor and waxing the chain, takes around 10 minutes.

That’s a huge improvement compared to older setups from competitors.

The heater automatically melts the wax to the perfect temperature and then shakes the chain inside the wax bath. This helps wax penetrate deep into the chain’s rollers and links, where lubrication actually matters.

The result: a perfectly waxed chain, every time.

A smarter way to handle your chain

Another innovation Ollie points out is the Spool. Before this, riders used everything from old spokes to pieces of string to lower chains into wax. We introduced the swizzle wire, which made the process much easier.

But the new Spool takes things a step further.

It keeps the chain compact, prevents it from falling into the wax, and works with chains of any length. It also allows riders to organise multiple chains neatly, something many experienced wax users do to rotate chains and extend drivetrain life.

It’s one of those simple ideas that makes the whole process smoother.

Why more riders are switching to wax

GCN also touches on why chain waxing has become so popular. Hot waxed chains offer several advantages:

  • Lower drivetrain friction

  • Much cleaner chains

  • No dirt sticking to your chain

  • Longer chain life

And with our hot wax devices, the process is no longer the messy, complicated routine it once was.

As Ollie shows in the video, you can wax multiple chains in one sitting while doing something else, making drivetrain maintenance far easier than most riders expect.

The best way to wax your chain

If you’ve made it this far, chances are you’re already curious about hot waxing. The good news is that it’s never been easier to get started. With our new Performance Wax Heater, the goal is this: make chain waxing simple so every cyclist can ride a cleaner, faster drivetrain.
